Each song features the gentle vocals from a mix of singers: Sally Oldfield, Soraya Saraswati and Ashley Mueckenberger, each of whom bring a sense of ethereal grace to the proceedings. Terry himself lends vocals to several of the tracks, using overdubbing to give his voice a Gregorian chant edge. The songs are all slow-paced with reverberated flutes, keyboards, piano and synthesizer atmosphere, all melding into dreamy serenades of joy and peace. Included are renditions of "Silent Night," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Once in David's Royal City" and more.

The plight of the land and people of Tibet are treated to Terry Oldfield’s rare musical balm on this hearfelt and healing album.

TEARS FROM TIBET is Terry Oldfield’s homage to the struggles of the Tibetan people. In the liner notes, Oldfield describes the soundscape as bittersweet, which is true; the compositions are at once happy and sad. The story of the Tibetan refugees is a tragic one and the music’s somber, at times longing tone reflects that. Yet, Oldfield often opts for a victorious air, depicting the fact that these poor souls may have lost their home, but their spirit cannot be broken. The music is often focused on the wispy beauty of Oldfield’s flute playing, which provides the cornerstone for the album’s melodies. Synthesizer moods are used to evoke emotions in the listener, while the sounds of brisk wintry winds whistle through the album’s backdrops. Excerpts of the Dalai Lama speaking and chatter from children playing also add a sense of gravity to the music.

In which we find Oldfield turning his gaze to the mix of music and nature for soundtracks to massage and healing arts. One of the true pioneers of New Age music, Terry Oldfield has changed the way the flute is thought of in relation to instrumental music (he's almost completely self-taught), and used his natural genius and spiritual humility to create albums such as the haunting Out of the Depths. Here, whales seem to have been given a platform with which to state their case to humankind. For this quietly devastating, monumentally beautiful work, Oldfield recruits the vocal talents of Imogene Moore, who lends classical dignity to her tracks, singing a soothing chorale-style lullaby over churning depths of whale song and ocean spray, rushing synth drones, gentle chimes, and, of course, Oldfield's legendary flute.

"Voice From the Depths" opens with slow rhythmic tides and Moore's wistful, hopeful, lonely-girl choir overhead, with a synthesizer drone that warbles alongside the whales to become an anchoring beat able to morph softly into strings or flutes at the crash of a wave. While the whales and chimes surge to center stage to create a sense of predestined heartache, the melody continues in a muted underwater form, as beautiful flute for "Whale Song," a glistening dirge that reflects like the setting sun on a still ocean, while deep below whales sleep, dream, and sing across the expanse of space and time, a softly cycling synthesizer creating a sense of cinematic floating.

This gentle soothing bed of sounds reaches a heady peak in the last of the album's three long tracks, "Hear My Plea." Moore returns with echoes of classical chorale-singing that merge with Oldfield's celebrated flute and the moody and inscrutable song of the whales. There have been many whale-fusion albums since Out of the Depths' original release in 1993, but few duplicate its ethereal majesty. And while the sense of ecological loss is always palpable, Oldfield turns it into a meditation on the frailty and temporality of all life, not just that of our oceanic brethren. We do what we can, but in the end letting global warming make you miserable is counterproductive. One should have a light heart even as they give their all against the seemingly unstoppable tide. Oldfield provides the tools for placing this melancholic sense of loss in a mythic perspective so that this lightness may naturally develop. Everything we see, hear, and feel has already happened and is already gone. Out of the Depths merely provides gentle reassurance that it will just as inevitably return, like the waves.

We inhale the healing essence of each chakracolor, and breathe out negativity around relationships, poverty consciousness, and lack of self-love. Partaking in this healing journey createsinner strength along with the sensation of an invisible protective shield. At the heart chakraSoraya instructs, “Anahat is our center of love, compassion, acceptance, first to yourself / as you breathe out, release any doubt about the self, self-hate or judgment / as you inhale, feel the joy flowing into every cell of this part of your body / feel the heart awakening.” Appropriate for our high tech, fast-paced lives, this meditation eases the mind, balances the body, and calms the nerves. 

The second meditation uses sound vibration to “break up dense energy and encourage the free flow of prana, or vital force, throughout the body.” Especially beautiful and rare instruments are interwoven with sounds of nature. Breath is also central to this meditation. We inhale and exhale whileabsorbing vibrations from the deep sounds of the didgeridoo, gongs, and heavy rain, shifting into sounds of the pan pipes, bells and crystal bowls, cycling into whales murmurs’, concluding with the “Om” mantra, and angelic voices leading us into higher realms. For most of us, this kind of live experience is unavailable, so getting close to the speakers, or usingsurround-sound to really soak it in, will enhance the meditation, increasehealing, and call us back for more.
